Residential facilities that provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and medication management, while still allowing residents to maintain some level of independence.

Legal practice area that focuses on issues affecting older adults, including estate planning, long-term care planning, guardianship, and elder abuse.
Estate Planning #
The process of making arrangements for the management and distribution of one's assets and belongings after death. Estate planning can involve wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and other legal documents.
Guardianship #
A legal relationship in which a court appoints a guardian to make decisions on behalf of an individual who is deemed incapacitated and unable to manage their own affairs.
Healthcare Proxy #
A legal document that allows an individual to appoint someone else to make healthcare decisions on their behalf if they become unable to do so themselves.
HIPAA #
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a federal law that protects the privacy and security of individuals' health information.
Home Health Care #
Services provided in the home to individuals who need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) or medical care. Home health care can include nursing care, physical therapy, and assistance with household tasks.
Long #
Term Care: Services that provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) and medical care to individuals who have chronic illnesses or disabilities and need help with daily tasks.
Medicaid #
A joint federal and state program that provides health insurance to low-income individuals, including coverage for long-term care services.
Medicare #
A federal health insurance program for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. Medicare covers medical services but has limited coverage for long-term care.
Nursing Home #
Residential facilities that provide 24-hour skilled nursing care for individuals who are unable to care for themselves due to illness, disability, or age-related conditions.
Patient Self #
Determination Act: Federal law that requires healthcare facilities to inform patients of their right to make decisions about their medical treatment, including the right to create advance directives.
Power of Attorney #
Legal document that allows an individual to appoint someone else to make financial or legal decisions on their behalf.
Probate #
The legal process of validating a will, settling debts, and distributing assets after a person's death.
Respite Care #
Short-term care provided to individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities to give their primary caregivers a break from caregiving responsibilities.
Social Security #

Trust #
A legal arrangement in which a person (the trustor) transfers assets to a trustee to be managed for the benefit of a beneficiary. Trusts can be used for estate planning, asset protection, and long-term care planning.
Will #
A legal document that outlines how a person's assets should be distributed after their death. Wills can also designate guardians for minor children and specify funeral arrangements.
VA Aid and Attendance Benefit #
A benefit program offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs that provides financial assistance to eligible veterans and their spouses who need help with activities of daily living.
Welfare Benefit Plan #
An employee benefit plan that provides welfare benefits, such as health insurance, life insurance, and disability benefits, to employees.
Younger #
Onset Alzheimer's Disease: Alzheimer's disease that occurs in individuals under the age of 65. Younger-onset Alzheimer's disease can present unique challenges for individuals and their families in terms of long-term care planning and legal issues.
